Self Managed

Management in VPS is one of the issues which is controllable by the consumer of the service.  Access to the highly technical side of the server is really requested by customers who need to be able to access it while others will want to have that managed by the hosting company itself.  Other customers would simply enjoy having a partial control over less essential portions of the server and focus more on their websites.  Of course the VPS service which offers the highest degree of control is one that is self managed.

Self Managed Virtual Hosting Service

Self Managed VPS services are the option that is available for customers that need to have the full range of control with the server.  This means that everything from updates to the server, customer support and more must be done by the customer themselves.  The options for self managed servers in VPS will often offer the highest selection of options that are comparable to a dedicated server.  The control of resources and utilities are often dictated by the type of plan that is chosen by the customer as well.

Self managed VPS services will tend to have a dedicated IP.  Additional IPs can be added with an additional cost or depending on the plan, may come with more under the cost of the plan.  Server access to databases will more than likely be included depending on the operating system that is in place with the selection.  Software titles and additional tools may come at an additional price if needed.  Operating systems which are open source or low cost will be available for installation such as Linux, Unix and derivatives such as Centos, Debian and SUSE.

The management of a VPS option is done through the use of a control panel.  Such option are possible with control panel software such as cPanel, Plesk  and other similar options  The process will also require that customers using completely self managed VPS options to provide their own updates and care to the software that is used for their control panel. Customer service may not be available if something goes wrong outside the scope of the hosting itself which means that the best that support can do is provide functions which restore hosting to “factory” settings.

If additional support is necessary, customers that decide to use a self managed VPS may have to pay premiums for support inquiries that may be limited in scope as well.  The additional responsibilities of the self managed VPS service may require that customers handle configuration of DNS, troubleshooting scripts and their configuration, management of website errors, controlling backup requests, installation and upkeep of security and providing support for third party applications which may not be supported natively by the VPS service OS selection.  The self managed VPS options are really best left to the companies and individuals or web development teams which have an extensive knowledge of servers, their configuration and other skills that are necessary for proper management of the server.
