The plot was kind of dumb and predictable, but the book was still entertaining thanks to Salvatore’s expertise in writing pulp fantasy action.

The central theme itself is one of revenge, love and betrayal; salvatoe which suit the fantasy genre well. You could say the Highwayman was a type of Robin Hood, but he had many more trials to overcome.

However, for the plot to be cohesive Salvatore stretches plausibility until you doubt the viability of the central theme to the story. The thing is, the boy is incapable of normal movement or fluent speech. Which of course results in some brilliant fighting scenes.


All I had to do was close my eyes and I actually felt like I was watching a movie. Especially if you’re a bit of a swashbuckling adventure freak like me.
