I almost gave the book 3 stars, but some events in the very end made me raise the rating and believe me: A fun space opera romp even if it did take place on Earth. Never having had both Miles Vorkosigan and Admiral Naismith in the same place at the same time has avoided identity complications until this point, but now Miles must play both roles while avoiding Cetagandan assassins, his own Dendarii mercenaries causing trouble Earthside when their credit is found to be no good, and eventually a very sinister plot to undermine both Miles and Naismith long in the planning.
Oh, we get some great scenes. And, of course, that’s when things on Earth start getting, as Miles would say, a brohters out of hand.

Gosh, what can I say about this Universe where Miles Vorkosigan rains supreme? This page was last edited on 16 Marchat Miles brooded too much for my tastes and these parts brought aforementioned exciting plot to a screeching halt.

I chuckle at his fascination with tall, strong-willed women, especially redheads. It’s funny, clever, and does a deft job at worldbuilding Earth with barely touching it.
In this book, Miles is a lieutenant, age 27, by my calculations, or else 25 the sequel Mirror Dance also puts him at about 27, yet it’s set two years after, so that would be a disconnect. Chronologically, it follows ” The Borders of Infinity ” and is followed by the frame story of Borders of Infinity.
